Alexander “The Mauler” Gustafsson, once one of the UFC’s top light heavyweights, is reportedly negotiating to transition into professional boxing under the Misfits Boxing banner.

Though he never captured a UFC title, Gustafsson earned major recognition by pushing elite opponents throughout his MMA run, before officially retiring in 2022. The Swedish fighter is said to be in advanced talks with Misfits, with plans to square off against another UFC alum if negotiations reach a conclusion.

Gustafsson’s recent MMA history includes a long layoff followed by failed comebacks. He first stepped away after his submission loss to Anthony Smith in June 2019. In 2020, he attempted a heavyweight return but was submitted by Fabrício Werdum in the first round. He then dropped back to light heavyweight and fought Nikita Krylov in London in July 2022, but was knocked out in the opening round. Afterwards, he was released from his UFC contract in December 2024. He subsequently signed with Global Fight League (GFL MMA), but the promotion never held an event before shutting down due to financial problems.

Over his MMA career, Gustafsson posted an 18-win, 8-loss record, with memorable victories against the likes of Glover Teixeira, Jimi Manuwa, and Matt Hamill. The talks with Misfits suggest he may try to bring his striking and competitive fire to the boxing world, possibly against an opponent with shared MMA experience.
